AAU receives over 1000 applications for its freshman class each year, this means that there are more qualified applicants than can be admitted.
The campus admissions review process selects from amongst this large and growing pool of applicants, individuals who have challenged themselves academically and who demonstrate commitment to activities and the type of service expected of students of AAU. College representatives and other University staff participate in the recruitment, identification, and selection of students, to recruit a class of students that is richly diverse. It is anticipated that those selected will contribute to and immerse themselves in AAU’s learning environment.
Whilst high school grades and standardized test scores are important indicators of academic achievement, they only tell part of the story. Character, service and integrity are also of utmost importance to AAU’s selectors.
The Review Process
AAU seeks freshman students who meet and exceed their high standards and who demonstrate the potential to be leaders in their chosen fields upon graduation. Applications for admission are subject to a rigorous and complete review by professionals from the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and the program to which the student has applied.
A variety of factors are considered upon review. Students’ academic performances and rigour are amongst the University’s primary criteria. A holistic approach combines the criteria under evaluation and each application receives at least two readings whilst under review. The Office of Admissions acts as a check and balance to the process in order to assess preliminary decisions and ensure that there is a high level of consistency and professional judgment used when making individual decisions about each applicant.
College professionals carefully review the wide range of information provided by applicants and each word of the application is considered when making an admissions decision. The personal and academic circumstances presented by each applicant are considered.
There is no set formula of weighting criteria and all final decisions are based on the a variety of criteria. Applicants should be sure to present themselves and their stories accurately and completely and should include a personal statement, list of activities, achievements, honours, personal strengths and future goals.
At AAU, we look for a record of successful achievement at the highest possible level, readers of applications evaluate the following criteria:
- Academic achievement in the highest level of rigour available at the applicant’s high school.
Consistent achievement at the highest level is the best possible demonstration of strong academic performance. When evaluating the strength of a student’s academic record, consideration is given to the rigour of individual courses and the grades earned in those courses. Because admission to AAU is so competitive, the minimum course requirements rarely satisfy admission expectations. Application Officers will also look for grade patterns in the applicants’ high school record. For example, it is always better for grades to improve over time rather than decline.
- Achievement outside the classroom that demonstrates personal strengths and skills.
AAU is looking for students who have the personal as well as the academic qualities to succeed and thrive on our campus. Application Officers expect that students with strong academic achievement will also demonstrate strong achievement outside of the classroom, in school and or community activities. Through such activities, applicants have the opportunity to demonstrate leadership ability, perseverance, creativity, generosity, determination, motivation, concern, intellectual curiosity, and the like.
